How to bulk-fix missing alt text in WordPress

A step-by-step walkthrough of finding every image missing alt text in your WordPress media library and generating descriptions for all of them — without editing each one by hand.

If your WordPress site has been around for a while, you almost certainly have images with missing alt text. Here is how to fix them at scale.

Step 1: Find the gaps

Open AltGenie and run an accessibility scan. The scanner reports every image in your media library that is missing alt text, plus any that share identical alt text with another image (a sign of copy-paste or placeholder text).

Step 2: Connect a key (or use Demo Mode)

AltGenie is bring-your-own-key. Add your OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Google Cloud Vision API key in settings. If you just want to see how it works before adding a key, Demo Mode generates sample descriptions without calling a provider.

Step 3: Bulk-generate

Select the images flagged as missing, choose your tone (descriptive, SEO-focused, or casual), and run bulk generation. AltGenie sends each image to your configured provider along with page context — title, excerpt, SEO keyword, taxonomy, or WooCommerce product data — so the result fits the page.

Step 4: Review and rollback

Every generation is saved to history. You can review any generated alt text, edit it, regenerate a single image, or roll back a batch if the results are not what you want. The duplicate-alt detector lets you fix each duplicate individually rather than overwriting everything.

Step 5: Set it and forget it

Turn on auto-generate-on-upload so new images get alt text the moment they are added, and schedule recurring scans to catch anything that slips through.
